Understanding Texas Holdem Poker Language

Here is a list of some common texas hold'em poker terminology


All In - This is when a player commits all their chips to the pot.

Blind Bet - These are the bets that are placed at the start of the round and are compulsory bets by the two players that sit to the left of the dealer.

Board - These are the community cards or the five cards that are delt in the middle of the table.

Buy-in - This is the amount of money needed to play at a poker table.

Call - This is when a player matches the amount bet by another player.

Check - This is when you choose not to make a bet when nobody else has placed a bet before you.

Community Cards - This is the five cards delt in the middle of the table

Dealer - This is the person that has control of the cards, all the action starts from the person sitting to their left.

Dealer Button - This is a disc or hockey shaped puck that is placed next to the dealer to help you identify who is the current dealer.

Flop - This is the first three community cards that are delt after the first round of betting.

Fold - To fold your hand is to conceed the game.

Heads up - This is when only two players are left in the game.

Kicker Card - When two players have similar hands like a pair of eights with one eight being in their hand and one on the table then the second card in their hand or kicker card is used to determine who wins the hand.

Muck - This is also a term used to fold your hand.

Pot - This is the total amount of money that has been bet in the current game being played.

Raise - This is when you bet more than the highest bet placed so far.

Re-raise - This is when you raise the bet after a player has already raised the bet before you.

River Card - The river card is the is the fith and final card to be delt by the dealer.

Side Pot - When a player goes all-in a secondary pot is formed when there is more than one other player still betting on the hand.

Split Pot - this is when two or more players have the same hand and share the value of the pot.

Turn - This is the fourth card delt by the dealer to the community cards.
